Seo Myengkyo


He received his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Malay–Indonesian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, an MA in Southeast Asian Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University, an MSc in Political Science from SOAS, University of London, and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge with research on the relationship between state and religion.

He is currently the head of the Department of Malay–Indonesian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul, South Korea. In addition, he serves as the Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and leads a research team under the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Support Program of the National Research Foundation of Korea. As a sociologist, his major publication is State Management of Religion in Indonesia (Routledge, 2013), and his research interests include de-globalization, citizenship, and the relationship between state and religion.
